Still a Best Selling Business Book

We were reading the September 29th Globe and Mail and saw that Work the Pond! was number 9 on the list of best selling business books. It seems to be a book with staying power and we figure it is because the stuff we tell you in the book works! One guy put it this way, “I just went out and did what it said in the book–and it works.  It’s that simple.”

Here are seven things that work and you can implement immediately….

1. People embrace the  idea of Positive Networking®. No one likes going out and selling themselves; they get push-back from others when they do. Positive Networking® is not about closing a sale, but opening a relationship. It’s so much easier and it makes you memorable for the right reasons.

2. Give out your business card as part of your graceful introduction. This has gotta be a secret because only half the people we meet have business cards on them–even at conferences.  Go figure…

3. Give yourself permission to talk to people you don’t know, and that includes rescuing those wallflowers–we’ve all been there and this is not a fun flower species.

4.  If you have anxiety around networking take a tag teammate.  Use the Glowing Introduction ™–sing their praises. It’s great cross-marketing.

5. After every event give yourself 20 to 30 minutes to do all your follow up.  Have emails ready to go and send later in the day–there is a thing about being too keen..

6. Have a host-like mentality when you walk into a room.  Figure that 80% of people are uncomfortable networking and if you can make them feel better, that is very empowering.

7. One event does not a network make; find good ponds and get involved. Do the time.

Business is challenging these days and while we can marketing many ways, most business is built on relationships and as Mark Burnett, of Survivor fame, says “face-to-face is the real currency”.  Learn the skills and face-to-face becomes so much easier.
